The most iconic brand that the group owns is the Duk Ling,Icon of Hong Kong®, the authentic Chinese Junk, a Chinese sailing vessel that routinely sails Victoria harbour. Known as the symbol of Hong Kong, the Duk Ling sails Hong Kong’s harbour for tourists and corporate charter.
The Duk Ling’s design origins dates back to 220 BC during the Han Dynasty. Modern Junks, of which the Duk Ling is an example, were a common sight in Hong Kong for over 150 years. Made from teak the Duk Ling has a junk ship rig of three sails where, in traditional Chinese junk style, the main mast is dominate. Junk sail design takes a low tech approach to sailing and requires only inexpensive components. In the case of the Duk Ling the spars are bamboo. Many of the early design innovations found in these early vessels made there way in to the designs of western ships. The Duk Ling in keeping with tradition and it’s authenticity makes it special.
China Pub Company acquired the Duk Ling in November 2005 and since that time it has continued to represent the continual success of the company. It is chartered twice weekly by the Hong Kong Tourist Board to sail in Victoria Harbour and routinely features in movies, tourist brochures, on covers of tourist books and advertisements. A number of well-known brands such as Qantas, Glenfiddich and Trailfinders have used the Duk Ling as part of their marketing campaigns. DK Publishing currently features the Duk Ling on the front cover of their popular Hong Kong Eyewitness travel guide and in the past travel guides, including Time Out and the Rough Guide, have done so to.
The Duk Ling is routinely chartered by corporations, and film producers gaining world-wide attention for the Duk Ling and China Pub company. Corporations including Goldman Sachs, Diagio (Johnny Walker), British Airways, Macquarie Bank, HSBC, I’Oreal have hosted corporate events. Well known pop groups and artists like Oasis have taken timeout to sail around Hong Kong. The Duk Ling has also featured in numerous films, documentaries and magazines including the Jules Verne classic, “Around the World in 80 Days”, James Cavell’s, “Taipan” and Time Magazine. This exposure gives China Pub Company world-wide publicity and provides a solid recognisable foundation to our brands.
